CHICAGO EDDIE HAS SOME STORIES FOR YOU>>>

Was watching this character's antics from afar out in Rockaway earlier today and thinking to myself "man, someone needs to film this guy, he's a walking reality show..." Then our paths collided and I was roped into receiving an hour-plus monologue from him with his face thrust as close as possible to mine --- which made dodging the huge chunks of flying spit that much harder... He covered lots of ground -- from his varied careers in military intelligence, drug smuggling, and 60's boy bands; to his family mafia connections, dodging hit men and the law, the airplane he once hijacked, and his role in helping get the legendary rock band STYX off the ground!!! He even claims that Styx's hit song "Renegade" was written about him... who knows?? The stories he had about his late-60's Chicago group that won a Battle of the Bands contest and received a trip to Europe as the reward did pass my fact-checks so maybe it's all true..... and sure enough someone was smart enough to film him -- I did a quick Google search and found the above video that went up about 6 weeks ago and had exactly ZERO views until my peep... now you too can spend 6 minutes with Chicago Eddie -- he's hardly getting warmed up here -- look for a spoken word vinyl + dvd box set sometime early next year...

NEW VIDEO: "FOUR UNIT FAMILY"FINAL INSTALLMENT OF MAYa'S 4-SONG VIDEO E.P. "M"

Following her 10-inch vinyl EPs “A” and “Y”, Brooklyn-based musician MAYa, who originally hails from the UK, has released her video-only EP “M”. “Four Unit Family”, the final installment in the four video set, was shot in a Berlin dance studio by Christoph Kube and directed by DFA artist/musician Delia Gonzalez.

According to MAYa, the video collaboration references “early Eurythmics videos, Fassbinder’s film “The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant", 70s-fashion perfume ads, and the duality between male and female characters”. The track was recorded in an all-analogue recording studio in Berlin, using vintage Russian synths.

“Four Unit Family” has a stylish, elegant air rarely seen in contemporary music videos. Gonzalez captures an introspective 70s european high-fashion vibe, with slow-moving close-ups bathed in a soft golden light, flowing gracefully with the mysterious atmosphere of the music. MAYa is visually striking in her double-persona; embodying anima and animus, and playing with concepts of self-reflection and role-reversal through costuming, mirrors and reflections. 

The sparse instrumentation and cool understated vocals are at once comforting and unsettling, with a disquieting undercurrent lurking beneath the surface. Veiled lyrics such as “ignoring the holes in the fire as you try to keep warm”, and “so confused by his daughter’s place in your four unit family”, hint at a dark view of family interactions, while leaving things ambiguous. MAYa’s music shares a kinship with groups like Current 93 and Coil who were influenced by the surrealists. Taking a similar experimental approach, MAYa explores the depths of the subconscious to unlock hidden recesses of the psyche.

The other videos in the “M” series have an equally sophisticated aesthetic vision. MAYa has collected an exceptional array of filmmakers and performers to collaborate with: Kenneth Zoran Curwood shot “Embrace Comfort” on super-8 and super-16 film, using hand-processing to create psychedelic violet hues that highlight model Adina Fohlin’s spooky victorian garb. “Allyoueverwanted” was shot in London by photographer Michele Turriani, and stars Millie Kalvis, a charismatic young girl with red hair and hypnotic eyes, whom MAYa has known since birth. The lushly orchestral “The Takers” was shot and directed by MAYa’s frequent collaborator Sebastian Mlynarski, and features a stunning performance by artist Raul de Nieves in surreal costume, while hyper-colorful beads, pearls and paints float through strange liquids.

Although “M” is a highly personal work, MAYa has smartly enlisted a cast of talented friends to add to the mix; in addition to those mentioned above, she has worked with J.G. Thirlwell, Joe Budenholzer, and Iver Ask Overgaard. She is also active as a DJ and video-documentarian within the Brooklyn-based Live With Animals arts community. It is unusual to see an EP released in a video-only format, but this unique idea is yet one more example of MAYa’s commitment to an artistic vision which extends beyond the expected.

THE GLOWING REVIEWS FOR ALICE COHEN'S NEW ALBUM "PINK KEYS" KEEP FLOWING IN... OUR FRIENDS AT NORMAN RECORDS IN LEEDS, UK HAVE AWARDED "PINK KEYS" THEIR "ALBUM OF THE WEEK" DISTINCTION -- HERE'S THEIR WRITE-UP BELOW: 

Alice Cohen returns with a fourth solo album - the second for Crinoline and with assisted this time from the newly revived Olde English Spelling Bee. Anyone familiar with the name may know a little of Cohen’s almost-pop career in the mid ‘80s as front-woman for minimalist synth pop outfit The Vels or maybe her adventures in the ‘90s with Die Monster Die, her very brief stint with Helivator, her current forays into more experimental musical forms and maybe even the video art she’s recently created for the likes of Ducktails (her ‘Landrunner’ video is outstanding), Coasting and Greatest Hits among others. How Cohen found herself tied up in the whole hypnagogic movement I’m not entirely sure but her roots in minimalist soul, disco and synth pop make her the perfect hypnagogmother to this loose collective of creative characters. ‘Pink Keys’ is the kind of album I could happily listen to over and over - especially in this hazy summer heat. Cohen’s creative instincts for pop songcraft are second to none and she’s lucky enough to also be blessed with a beautiful voice and mad synth skills. Like Prince, you get the impression that Cohen could churn out infinite rays of perfect pop indefinitely with little to no effort and on ‘Pink Keys’ we are treated to eleven magical pop variations Madonna should have written long ago. A must-own record.

You can not stop thinking. About 18, I finally calmed down, I thought I could stop thinking completely. I become a zombie for four years. Then, in a broken heart, I started again. I came out of the "grip" that held me tight. I started hearing voices. I also tried to kill time. First, you must confess that it's people like you and I believe that is broadcasting the idea. It is terrible. When I look around, I am someone who is the same idea with me. My idea is to broadcast. You can read our thoughts. The first is that we can consider a bad idea (like gender or a person's weaknesses). Second, we believe that we have the power to make people read our thoughts, even if it is bad. Because it has the broadcasting of this thought, please consider why it is a lot of people. To hear any ideas you and I are thinking of and I thought of you. Some people think that for all this world, and you can hear what you think they are. The reason for this is that you can read the mind of everyone of us. There have been times when I have an idea that I will consider 'evil'. I do not believe them, but I know they are in my own voice in my head. Then, I would think that they have been implanted by external forces trying to influence my behavior. I just do not want it to develop into something like I do not believe, my inner voice is your own or something like that.
